Tears For Fears - Research/Criticism
Tears for Fears sang a song titled "Shout," in 1985. It was a great song in a time when alternative and industrial music was around. That meant the techno sound was alive and people felt as though it a cry for rebellion of teenagers, but then again every decade the new music craze is a cry for rebellion. With that in mind the song was an easy listening hit by a duo of singers with nice keyboard, guitar acoustics in the back. The words were deep in meaning, but soft in sound. Tears For Fears by no means was a rock band, but the rhymes made the music acceptable and very soft sound. This is because the words were smooth in sound the only one being Shout, which was put in in instances where a dramatic change was needed.
I feel that the group used some amount of apostrophe, because in the lyrics the speaker is singing to a person who may or may not be the listener, although it is stated as being "you". This allows the singers to direct the song to any individual and allows that individual to make his/her own mind of what the total meaning of the lyrics are. Like the Incubus and Disturbed songs I felt this also dealt with hard times in life, as many depressing songs did, but when sung makes it soothing to hear. I have no idea what the total meaning is because in one instance he is describing relationships to parents, then asking the person to let their guard down, so he can break their heart.
